Business Licenses – (information current as of August 1, 2024)

The Jefferson County Revenue Department administers State of Alabama business privilege licenses levied under the provisions of Title 40, Chapter 12 (State of Alabama Privilege and Store Licenses) and Title 34, Chapter 35 (Transient Merchant) of the 1975 Code of Alabama, as amended.

The Revenue Department also administers Jefferson County licenses required under Act No. 1957-314 (Septic Tank Pumping), Act No. 1991-170 (Municipal Real Estate), and Act No. 2011-662 authorizing Jefferson County Ordinance No.1801 (Jefferson County Entity Business License Tax). If you have a new business, click here to print an Application for Tax or License Number to complete for your business. Once you have mailed or emailed the completed application to us, we will review and determine if any licenses are due or may come due in the future and return a billing statement.

State of Alabama Business Licenses –License fees are determined by the exact nature, type, and location of your business. Some licenses require State Regulatory Permits in order to issue, such as auto dealers, food establishments, and air conditioning contractors. *Note: Most cities located inside Jefferson County require a city business license which will be in addition to state licenses. Please check with your local city to see if you also need to obtain a city business license in addition to the State licenses.
